Recently, there have been widespread reports about new scams targeting electronic banking account holders. VPBank would like to share with our valued customers how to recognize these scams and protect their bank accounts.
- Scam Alert: To successfully carry out this scam, fraudsters first need to know the electronic banking username. They then intentionally enter the wrong password the required number of times set by the bank (usually 3 or 5 attempts) to lock the account. Next, the fraudster calls the account holder, impersonating a bank employee, and informs them their account has been locked. They offer to help unlock it by sending a link for the customer to log in.
- How the scam works: Fraudsters try to guess the username, often using the customer’s account number or phone number. Although few banks now allow login via account number, many users prefer to log in using their phone number, which scammers mostly try to guess as the username.
- Important: According to the Credit Institutions Law, banks never disclose customers’ personal information—including account numbers, usernames, phone numbers, emails—to anyone unless required by Vietnamese law.
VPBank’s Recommendations to Protect You:
-
If you receive a call claiming to be from the bank informing you your account is locked: This is definitely a scam. Bank employees never proactively call customers to notify them of such issues.
-
If someone claiming to be a bank staff sends you a link to unlock your account: Always verify by calling the official VPBank hotline before clicking any links or downloading any apps. These links and apps are usually fraudulent and aim to steal your assets. NEVER click on unfamiliar links or download unknown apps.
-
Protect your personal information: Be cautious about sharing ID documents, phone numbers, login usernames, passwords, or OTP codes with anyone—even if they claim to be bank staff. Banks never ask for OTP codes.
-
Law enforcement or banks NEVER ask you to verify, freeze accounts, or transfer money via phone calls.
-
If you find your account locked: Contact VPBank directly through the official hotlines—1900545415 (Standard customers) or 1800545415 (Priority customers)—or visit the nearest branch for assistance.
